BBs are the one thing every airsoft player needs to buy regularly and the one thing most beginners don’t think about enough. Using the wrong weight, the wrong quality or the wrong brand can tank your accuracy, jam your gun and even damage your internals.

BB weight, the most important choice
The weight of your BBs has a direct impact on accuracy, range and consistency. Heavier BBs fly straighter, resist wind better and carry energy more efficiently over distance. Lighter BBs travel faster but are less stable.

The general rule: Use the heaviest BB your hop-up can lift properly. If your BB curves downward before reaching your target, it’s too heavy for your current hop-up setting or rubber. If it flies flat and then drops sharply, you’ve found the right weight or can go slightly heavier.
BB weight explained in detail
0.20g, the baseline
Standard weight included with most guns. Fine for target shooting and CQB at very close range. Not recommended for outdoor skirmishing, they’re too light and inconsistent in any wind. Most chrono testing uses 0.20g as the reference weight.
0.25g, good starting point
The most popular weight for casual outdoor skirmishing. Noticeable improvement over 0.20g in stability and accuracy. Works well with stock hop-up systems. A solid all-rounder if you’re not sure what to use.
0.28g, the sweet spot for upgraded guns
If you’ve upgraded your hop rubber and barrel (see our upgrade guide), 0.28g BBs are where you’ll really start to see the benefit. Excellent stability, good range and noticeably tighter groupings than lighter options. The go-to choice for most intermediate players with tuned AEGs.
0.30g to 0.32g, precision territory
For well-built AEGs, DMRs and players who prioritise accuracy over volume of fire. Requires a properly set up hop-up with a quality rubber. The extra weight provides exceptional flight stability, BBs hold their line much better in crosswinds.
0.36g to 0.46g, sniper and DMR specialist
Reserved for high-powered platforms (450-500 FPS) with upgraded hop-up systems. These weights are essential for getting the most out of bolt action sniper rifles and purpose-built DMRs. The heaviest weights (0.43g-0.46g) are specifically for competition-level sniper setups.

BB quality, why it matters more than you think
Not all BBs are created equal. A cheap BB can be slightly oval, have visible seams, inconsistent weight or contain air bubbles. Any of these defects will send your shot off target and in the worst case, can shatter inside your barrel or hop-up, causing damage.
What makes a quality BB?
- Roundness, polished to near-perfect spheres (±0.01mm tolerance). Imperfect BBs wobble in the barrel
- Weight consistency, every BB in the bag should be within ±0.01g of the stated weight
- Surface finish, smooth, polished surface without seams, dimples or rough patches
- No air bubbles, internal air pockets cause the BB to be lighter on one side, creating spin drift
- Correct diameter, 5.95mm ±0.01mm is standard. Oversized BBs jam; undersized BBs rattle
Rule of thumb: If you can see or feel a seam on the BB, don’t use it in a gun you care about.
Bio BBs vs standard BBs
An increasing number of UK airsoft sites now require biodegradable BBs. Even sites that don’t mandate them strongly encourage their use, thousands of non-bio plastic BBs littering woodland is an environmental issue that threatens site licences.
Bio BBs explained
- Made from PLA (polylactic acid), a plant-based bioplastic derived from corn starch or similar sources
- Degrade over time, typically 1-3 years depending on conditions (soil, moisture, sunlight)
- Performance is now equal to standard BBs, modern bio BBs from reputable brands match non-bio quality. The old perception that bio BBs are inferior is outdated
- Slightly more expensive, typically 10-20% more than equivalent non-bio BBs
- Store properly, bio BBs can absorb moisture in humid conditions. Keep them sealed in their original packaging
Our recommendation
Use bio BBs. The performance difference is negligible with quality brands, the environmental impact is real and an increasing number of sites mandate them. It’s the responsible choice and will become the standard.

- Reused BBs, Never pick up and reuse BBs. Even one use can deform them enough to cause jams or barrel damage

How many BBs do you need?
A typical game day uses between 1,000 and 4,000 BBs depending on your playstyle, gun type and how trigger-happy you are.

Pro tip: Buying in bulk saves money. A 5,000 bag typically costs less per BB than a 1,000 bag. If you play regularly, buying 10,000 or more at once makes financial sense.
BB storage tips
- Keep bags sealed, especially bio BBs, which can absorb moisture
- Store in a cool, dry place, not in your car boot or a damp garage
- Use a BB loader, don’t pour BBs directly into magazines (wastes BBs and can introduce dirt)
- Don’t mix weights in the same magazine, inconsistent BB weight = inconsistent shots
- Use them within 12 months, especially bio BBs, which can begin degrading in poor storage conditions

Frequently asked questions
What weight BBs should I use in my AEG?
For a stock AEG, start with 0.25g. If you’ve upgraded your hop rubber and barrel, move up to 0.28g. Use the heaviest weight your hop-up can lift properly, if BBs curve downward early, they’re too heavy for your current setup.
Are bio BBs as good as regular BBs?
Yes, from reputable brands, modern bio BBs are virtually identical in performance to standard BBs. The old perception of bio BBs being inferior is based on early-generation products. Buy quality bio BBs and you won’t notice a difference.
Can I use 0.12g BBs in my airsoft gun?
Only for target practice at very short range. 0.12g BBs are extremely light, inaccurate beyond a few metres and can shatter more easily. They’re sometimes included with spring pistols but are not suitable for skirmishing.
Do heavier BBs do more damage?
Not necessarily. A heavier BB at lower FPS can carry the same energy (joules) as a lighter BB at higher FPS. Sites set FPS limits based on energy, not weight, to keep things safe regardless of what BBs you use.
Should I use the BBs that came with my gun?
The BBs included with most guns are typically 0.20g and low quality. They’re fine for testing that the gun works but replace them with quality 0.25g BBs before you skirmish.
Can I reuse BBs?
No. Never. Even being fired once can deform a BB enough to cause jams or barrel damage. Used BBs also pick up dirt and debris. Fresh BBs every time, no exceptions.
