How to Mount and Zero a Scope or Red Dot: Airsoft and Air Rifle Guide

You have unboxed a lovely new scope, bolted it on, and your first shots are landing the width of a dinner plate from where the crosshair sits. Before you blame the glass, know this: nine times out of ten the problem is the mount or the zero, not the optic itself. Learning to mount and zero a scope or red dot properly is a methodical job any shooter can master, and getting it right once saves a season of guesswork on the range or the skirmish field.

We have been fitting and zeroing optics in our Rochester workshop on the Medway City Estate in Kent since 2006, on everything from spring air rifles for pest control to skirmish AEGs (Automatic Electric Guns). The same principles carry across both worlds. This guide walks the whole process, from choosing rings to walking in your final zero, and flags where it pays to hand the job over.

Know your rail: dovetail, Picatinny and Weaver

Before you buy a single mount, you need to know what your gun actually offers. The rail is the metal platform your rings or mount clamp onto, and getting the match wrong is the most common reason an optic sits in a drawer instead of on a rifle. Three rail types cover almost everything you will meet in air rifles and airsoft.

Check which you have before ordering anything. If your rifle wears an 11mm dovetail but your optic shipped with a Picatinny mount, you will need an adaptor rail or a set of dovetail rings to bridge the gap. It is a five-minute fix once you know, and a real headache if you find out on game morning.

One point is specific to airguns and matters enormously. Spring and gas ram rifles recoil in two directions, a sharp forward-and-back double shove that shakes mounts loose over time. On an 11mm dovetail you want rings with a recoil pin or arrestor, or a rail with a scope stop, so the mount cannot creep backwards under that jolt. AEGs, PCPs (pre-charged pneumatics) and CO2 guns are gentle by comparison and rarely suffer this.

Tom brought a .22 springer into the workshop last winter, certain his new scope was faulty. Every few magazines his groups climbed a couple of inches up the target, then reset the next session. The scope was perfect. His two-piece rings had no recoil pin, so the twin-direction jolt of the piston was walking the whole mount backwards a fraction at a time. We fitted rings with an arrestor into the dovetail, zeroed once, and the drift vanished. He had been re-zeroing every visit to cure a fault that a proper set of rings solved.


Choosing rings and the right mount height

With the rail sorted, the next choice is rings and height. Two-piece rings suit most jobs and let you position the front and rear supports independently. A one-piece mount adds rigidity and is handy on airsoft, where a longer optic or a magnifier needs a single stable base.

Ring diameter must match your scope tube, usually 25mm (1 inch) or 30mm, and the two are not interchangeable. If your scope has a large objective bell, you also need enough height for it to clear the barrel.

Beyond clearance, keep the optic as low as you sensibly can. A lower scope sits closer to the bore line, which makes point of aim and point of impact easier to reconcile and gives a more natural head position. Mount too high and you crane up off the stock, and every time your cheek lands differently your zero appears to shift.

Mounting the optic, step by step

Work on a stable surface with the gun supported and safe. Airsoft users should remove the magazine and the battery or gas. Airgun users must be certain the rifle is uncocked and uncharged. Take your time here, because rushing the mount is where most zeroing headaches are born.

1. Fit the ring bases

Attach the ring bases or one-piece mount to the rail, engaging any recoil pin into a slot or against the scope stop. Nip them up so they are secure but leave the top caps off. Sit the scope in the lower halves, then lay the top caps on loosely, just enough to hold the tube while it still slides forward and back and rotates freely.

2. Set your eye relief

Eye relief is the distance between your eye and the rear lens at which you see a full picture. Shoulder the gun in your natural stance with your eyes closed, then open them. Slide the scope forward or back until you see a full, edge-to-edge sight picture with no dark ring creeping in.

Most scopes have a sweet spot of roughly an inch, so aim for the middle of it. That keeps your view clear across sitting, kneeling and prone positions, not just the one you set it in.

3. Level the reticle

Without nudging the scope forward or back, rotate it until the vertical crosshair is truly upright relative to the gun. Level the rifle first with a bubble level on a flat part of the action, then line the reticle against something you know is vertical, such as a door frame or a hung plumb line. A canted, or tilted, reticle throws your shots sideways as range increases, so this small step earns its keep.

4. Tighten evenly, not tightly

Tighten the ring cap screws gradually in a criss-cross pattern, a little on each in turn, so the gap between cap and base stays even on both sides. Never fully tighten one screw before moving to the next.

If you have a torque driver, use the value in your scope or ring instructions. Many airgun and airsoft scopes call for a modest figure, so err on the light side. Overtightening dents the tube, damages the optic and can strip the threads. Snug and even beats brute force every time. What “zero” actually means

Zeroing means adjusting the optic so the reticle or dot marks exactly where your projectile lands at one chosen distance. It sounds obvious, but the key word is “one”. Because a pellet or a BB drops in flight under gravity, your optic can only be dead on at a single range.

Shoot closer than your zero and the projectile has not fallen yet, so it prints high. Shoot further and it has dropped below the line, so it prints low. That curved path is why the zero distance you pick should match the ranges you actually shoot at, not a number that sounds impressive.

There is one airsoft-specific twist. On a BB gun the hop-up, the unit that puts backspin on the BB to extend its flight, does most of the work shaping the trajectory. Set the hop-up first, then zero the sight to match it. Touch them in the wrong order and you will chase your tail all afternoon.


Choosing your zero distance

Pick a distance that reflects how and where you shoot. Here is a sensible starting point for the three most common uses, though you should always fine tune to your own gun and ammunition.

Some air rifle shooters prefer a “two-range zero”, where the pellet’s arc crosses the line of sight twice, giving a near and a far zero. That is a refinement for later; for your first setup, one honest distance is plenty.

Whatever you choose, commit to one pellet or one BB weight and stick with it. Different pellet weights and head sizes, or different BB weights, land at different points from the same gun at the same range. Settle the ammunition question first, then zero with exactly what you intend to shoot on the day.

Aisha learned this the hard way at a Kent skirmish site. She spent a frustrating morning zeroing the red dot on her AEG, only for her BBs to sail high over targets at 25 metres. She kept dialling the dot lower, and it kept getting worse. The optic was never the problem. Her hop-up was wound on far too hard, lifting every BB skyward. Once she backed the hop off to a flat, floating flight and left the dot alone, her shots landed where she looked. On airsoft the hop-up sets the trajectory, and the sight only reports where it goes.


Zeroing a scope, step by step

Set up a solid rest before you fire a shot. Sandbags, a bipod or a bench block remove your own wobble from the equation, which is the entire point of zeroing. You want to see where the gun shoots, not where your hands wander. Fire from the same supported position throughout.

  • Start close. Begin at 10 yards or metres so your very first shots land on paper. If your scope has an adjustable objective or side focus, set it to your zero distance to remove parallax, the apparent wander of the reticle when your head moves.
  • Fire a group, not a shot. Aim at the centre and fire three to five rounds at the same aim point. A group shows where the gun is really shooting, whereas a single shot can lie to you.
  • Read the turrets. The top turret adjusts elevation, meaning up and down. The side turret adjusts windage, meaning left and right. Each is marked with a click value and a direction arrow.
  • Adjust toward your aim point. Move the reticle onto the group. If the group sits low and left, dial up and right. Count your clicks based on how far off the group is.
  • Walk it out. Fire a fresh group, adjust again, and move out to your full zero distance once you are reliably on paper. Stop when your groups sit where you aim.

Resist the urge to touch the turrets after a single round. Most first-time zeros are done inside 20 to 30 shots, and starting close keeps that count, and your ammunition bill, sensibly low.


Click values: MOA and mil made simple

Click values are simply how far each click of the turret shifts your point of impact. Scopes are usually graduated in one of two angular units, and you do not need to love the maths to use them well.

MOA (minute of angle) is a small slice of a degree. A quarter-MOA per click is the most common standard on airgun scopes, and one MOA works out to roughly one inch at 100 yards. Mil (milliradian) is a different angular unit favoured on many tactical optics, typically adjusting in tenth-mil clicks. Both do the identical job of moving your point of impact; they just carve up the turret differently.

The one rule that really matters is to keep them matched. If your reticle is marked in MOA, your turrets should be in MOA too, and the same goes for mil. Zeroing a red dot

A red dot is simpler than a magnified scope because there is no reticle to level and no magnification to fuss over. That is why they are so popular on airsoft AEGs and pistols, where fast target acquisition beats fine precision.

Mount it securely, then use the same routine as a scope. Rest the gun, fire a group at your chosen distance, and use the windage and elevation adjustments to walk the dot onto the group. The screws work exactly as scope turrets do, up and down on one, left and right on the other, usually with a small supplied key.

Troubleshooting: common mistakes and fixes

Most zeroing problems are not faults with the optic at all. They are small setup errors that repeat themselves shot after shot. Here are the ones we see most often in the workshop, and how to put each right.

The single most common error deserves its own mention: chasing single shots. Adjusting the turret after every round means a stray flier sends you round in circles, undoing good work with bad. Always read a group of three to five before you touch anything.


When to let the workshop do it

Mounting and zeroing is well within reach of any shooter with patience and a rest, and most people who take it slowly get a clean result first time. That said, there are a few situations where handing it over simply saves you time and frustration.

  • Awkward rail and optic combinations where the fit is not obvious and you would rather not buy the wrong adaptor twice
  • A springer that keeps shaking its mount loose, which usually points to a scope-stop or ring choice that needs sorting properly
  • Wanting a known-good starting point so you can fine tune from a proper zero rather than from scratch

Ben had been zeroing his PCP for the best part of an hour and getting nowhere. He was adjusting after every single shot, so a flier here and a called pull there sent him chasing the reticle around the target. We put the rifle on a bag, fired one clean group of five, made a single adjustment, and it was done inside 10 minutes. The lesson had nothing to do with his kit. It was reading a group instead of a shot.

Frequently asked questions

How many shots does it take to zero a scope?

Usually somewhere between 20 and 30, spread across a few groups of three to five shots. You fire a group, adjust, fire another and repeat until it lands where you aim. Starting close so your first shots hit paper keeps the count down and saves ammunition.

What distance should I zero my air rifle at?

It depends on use. Around 20 to 25 yards suits general plinking and target work, while 30 to 40 yards suits pest control and hunting where shots are longer. Choose the distance you most often shoot at, since the pellet is only dead on at your zero and drops either side of it.

Do I need a torque wrench to mount a scope?

It is not essential, but it helps, especially with lightweight airgun and airsoft scopes that are easy to overtighten. Without one, tighten the ring screws gradually in a criss-cross pattern and keep the gaps even on both sides. Snug and even is the goal, not as tight as possible.
