Clean water anywhere you roam

The MSR MiniWorks EX is a proven backcountry microfilter built for frequent, heavy use. Its Marathon EX ceramic and carbon element strips out bacteria, protozoa and sediment down to 0.2 microns while the carbon core cuts unpleasant tastes and odours, so water from a stream, tarn or tap tastes clean and reassuring.

Field-maintainable when it matters

Unlike hollow-fibre filters that clog and die, the MiniWorks EX is designed to be serviced by hand. When flow slows, a quick scrub of the ceramic restores it, no tools required. That means reliable output on long expeditions where you cannot simply buy a replacement.

Fast, steady flow

The clever AirSpring Accumulator smooths each stroke and helps deliver up to one litre per minute, so filling bottles and reservoirs for the group does not become a chore at the end of a long day.

Trusted, long-lasting build

Meeting NSF protocol P231 and treating up to 2000 litres per element, the MiniWorks EX is a long-term investment rather than a disposable. The base threads straight onto MSR and wide-mouth Nalgene bottles for a spill-free fill.

Frequently asked questions

Does the MiniWorks EX remove viruses?

No. The 0.2 micron ceramic element removes bacteria, protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, particulate and many chemicals, but it is not rated for viruses. In areas with viral risk, add chemical or UV treatment.

Can I service it in the field?

Yes. The ceramic element is designed to be cleaned by hand with the abrasive pad or a scour, restoring flow repeatedly without any tools, so you are never stranded with a clogged filter.

How long does one element last?

The Marathon EX element treats up to 2000 litres depending on water quality. You can gauge remaining life by measuring the ceramic diameter with the supplied gauge.

Does it improve the taste of the water?

Yes. The activated carbon core in the element reduces unpleasant tastes, odours and many chemicals, so treated water is clean and pleasant to drink.

What bottles does it fit?

The base threads directly onto MSR water bottles and standard wide-mouth Nalgene bottles, and the hose can also fill hydration reservoirs and pots.
