Choosing between AEG, GBB and HPA is one of the most important decisions in airsoft. Each power source has genuine strengths and real trade-offs and the best choice depends on your budget, playstyle and how much maintenance you’re willing to do.
This guide gives you an honest, side-by-side comparison so you can make the right call for your situation. No hype, no bias, just practical advice from people who’ve been selling and servicing all three types since 2006 from our Rochester shop and workshop in Kent.

AEG (Automatic Electric Gun)
The AEG is the backbone of airsoft. A rechargeable battery powers an electric motor that cycles a piston inside a gearbox, compressing a spring to fire each BB. The vast majority of airsoft players, from beginners to veterans, use an AEG as their primary weapon.

How It Works
When you pull the trigger, a microswitch or electronic trigger unit (ETU) completes a circuit. The motor spins, driving a series of gears that pull a piston backwards against a spring. When the piston releases, the compressed spring forces air through a nozzle, propelling the BB through the hop-up and down the barrel.
In full-auto mode, this cycle repeats continuously, a typical AEG fires 12-20 rounds per second. In semi-auto, one trigger pull = one cycle = one shot.
Advantages
- Consistency, AEGs deliver the same FPS, shot after shot, regardless of temperature. Whether it’s a freezing January game or a sweltering August day, your gun performs identically.
- Low running costs, A LiPo battery costs £15-25, lasts 1,000+ shots per charge and recharges hundreds of times. Your only consumable is BBs.
- Reliability, A quality AEG will run thousands of rounds between services. The gearbox is enclosed and protected from dirt and moisture.
- Upgrade ecosystem, The aftermarket for AEG parts is enormous. Gears, motors, barrels, hop-ups, MOSFETs, pistons, everything is available from multiple brands at every price point.
- Magazine capacity, Hi-cap magazines hold 300-600 BBs. Mid-caps hold 100-190. You’ll never run dry in the middle of a firefight.
- Beginner-friendly, Charge the battery, load the magazine, play. There’s nothing to adjust, no gas to worry about and the learning curve is minimal.
Disadvantages
- Limited realism, Most AEGs don’t have blowback (the slide/bolt doesn’t cycle). Some models offer “EBB” (Electric Blowback) but it’s a mild vibration, not true recoil.
- Trigger response, Standard AEG triggers have a slight delay as the motor spins up. High-speed motors, MOSFETs and precocking solve this but it’s an extra investment.
- Gearbox noise, AEGs make a distinctive whirring/clicking sound. Not stealthy. (Some players actually prefer this, it’s satisfying.)
- Battery management, LiPo batteries require a balance charger, storage at correct voltage (3.8v per cell) and shouldn’t be left fully charged or fully drained.
Best For
First guns, all-day skirmishing, woodland play, CQB, competitive/speedsoft, anyone who wants a reliable primary that works in all conditions.

GBB (Gas Blowback)
GBB guns use compressed gas, green gas (essentially propane with silicone lubricant) or CO2 cartridges, to propel BBs and cycle the action. The “blowback” means the slide (on pistols) or bolt carrier (on rifles) physically travels backwards with each shot, giving realistic recoil.

How It Works
Gas is stored in the magazine (green gas) or in a cartridge inserted into the magazine (CO2). When you pull the trigger, a valve opens, releasing a burst of gas. Part of this gas propels the BB forward. The rest pushes the slide or bolt backwards, cocking the hammer for the next shot and feeding a fresh BB from the magazine.
This is the same basic operating principle as real firearms, just with lower pressure and BBs instead of bullets.
Advantages
- Realism, The blowback action gives genuine recoil feedback. The slide locks back on the last round. Magazine changes are realistic. Manual safeties work. For many players, this is the whole point.
- Trigger feel, GBB triggers are mechanical, not electrical. The trigger pull feels like a real trigger, short, crisp, immediate. No motor delay, no electronic intermediary.
- No battery, Gas is self-contained in the magazine. No batteries to charge, no wires to route, no MOSFET to programme.
- Training value, Military, police and security personnel use GBB airsoft guns for training because the manual of arms is almost identical to real firearms.
- Simple internals, No gearbox, no gears, no motor. The mechanical simplicity means fewer moving parts to break (though seals are a different story).
Disadvantages
- Cold weather performance, This is the big one. Green gas loses pressure below approximately 10°C. Your gun fires slower, weaker and may fail to cycle entirely. CO2 is better in cold weather but still affected below freezing.
- Higher running costs, A can of green gas (£10-15) fills approximately 8-12 magazine loads depending on the gun. CO2 cartridges (£0.50-1 each) last 1-3 magazine fills. Over a game day, this adds up.
- Magazine capacity, GBB rifle magazines typically hold 30-50 BBs (realistic capacity). Pistol magazines hold 15-25. You need many magazines and reload frequently.
- Magazine cost, GBB magazines are expensive (£25-50 each for rifles, £20-40 for pistols) because each one contains a gas reservoir. Budget for at least 3-4 rifle magazines.
- Maintenance, Seals, o-rings and valves need regular lubrication and occasional replacement. Gas magazines require more care than AEG mid-caps. Neglect maintenance and you’ll get gas leaks.
- Cool-down effect, Rapid firing cools the gas (physics of expanding gas), reducing pressure and FPS during sustained fire. This is especially noticeable in full-auto on GBB rifles.
Best For
Sidearms (almost everyone benefits from a GBB pistol), milsim enthusiasts, realism-focused players, training applications and anyone who values the feel and experience over raw efficiency.

HPA (High Pressure Air)
HPA systems use an external tank of compressed air connected to the gun via a braided hose. An internal engine (Polarstar, Wolverine, Mancraft, etc.) replaces the AEG gearbox or GBB valve system, using regulated air pressure to fire each BB.

How It Works
A high-pressure air tank (typically 3000-4500 PSI) connects to a regulator, which steps the pressure down to your desired output (60-120 PSI typically). A hose runs from the regulator to the gun’s engine. When you pull the trigger, a solenoid valve opens briefly, releasing a precise burst of air to fire the BB.
Most HPA engines are “drop-in” replacements for AEG gearboxes, you remove the gearbox from your AEG shell and install the HPA engine in its place. The gun’s externals, hop-up, barrel and magazines all stay the same.
Advantages
- Unmatched consistency, Every shot fires at exactly the same pressure. No FPS variation, no cool-down effect, no weather sensitivity. Shot-to-shot consistency is measured in single-digit FPS deviation.
- Adjustable FPS on the fly, Turn a dial on the regulator to change your FPS. Playing CQB? Dial down to 300 FPS. Moving to woodland? Dial up to 350. Running a DMR? Set to 420. One gun, multiple roles.
- Exceptional trigger response, Electronic trigger with no mechanical delay. The solenoid opens in milliseconds. HPA triggers are the fastest in airsoft.
- Near-silent operation, HPA guns produce a quiet “pop” compared to the mechanical whir of AEGs or the sharp crack of GBBs. With a suppressor (which actually works on HPA), they can be remarkably stealthy.
- Virtually zero wear, No gears grinding, no piston slamming, no springs compressing. The only mechanical action is a solenoid valve opening and closing. HPA engines can fire hundreds of thousands of rounds between services.
- Use any AEG shell, Because HPA engines replace the gearbox, you can HPA-convert almost any AEG. This means you get the externals and ergonomics you want with the performance of HPA.
Disadvantages
- The airline, You’re tethered to a tank by a hose. It’s coiled and typically doesn’t snag but it’s there. Some players find it immersion-breaking. Others forget about it after one game.
- Upfront cost, An HPA engine costs £200-400. Add a tank (£40-80), regulator (£50-150), line (£15-30) and battery for the FCU (£10-20). Total conversion: £315-680 on top of the host gun.
- Tank portability, You need to carry a tank, usually in a backpack, on a plate carrier or on a belt. Small 13ci tanks are compact but run out faster. Large 48ci tanks last all day but are bulky.
- Air fills, You need access to an HPA fill station. Most airsoft sites have them but check before you go. A scuba tank at home can also fill your airsoft tank dozens of times.
- Perception, Some players and sites view HPA negatively (“joule creep” concerns, adjustable FPS enabling cheating). Most sites are fine with HPA but may chronograph more strictly.
Best For
Experienced players who want peak performance, competitive players, tech enthusiasts who enjoy tuning and anyone tired of gearbox maintenance. HPA is the “endgame” platform for many players.

- Third gun (if needed): Either a specialist AEG for a specific role (sniper, DMR, CQB) or an HPA conversion of your primary if you want peak performance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is AEG or GBB better for airsoft?
For most players, AEG is the better practical choice, more reliable, cheaper to run and works in all weather. GBB is better for realism and as a sidearm. Neither is objectively “better”, they serve different purposes.
Is HPA better than AEG?
In terms of raw performance (consistency, trigger response, reliability), yes. But HPA costs significantly more, requires an air tank and is overkill for casual players. It’s the best choice for competitive and experienced players.
Can I use a GBB rifle in winter?
It depends on how cold it is. Above 10°C, green gas works fine. Below 10°C, performance drops noticeably. CO2 is more resistant to cold but still affected below freezing. If you play year-round in the UK, an AEG is more practical as a primary.
How much does it cost to convert to HPA?
Budget £300-500 for a complete conversion: HPA engine (£200-400), tank (£40-80), regulator (£50-150), line (£15-30) and FCU battery (£10-20). You keep your existing gun’s externals, hop-up, barrel and magazines.
Can I use AEG magazines with an HPA gun?
Yes, that’s one of the biggest advantages of HPA. Because the engine drops into an AEG shell, it uses standard AEG magazines. Your existing magazine collection works perfectly.
What about CO2 vs green gas?
CO2 runs at higher pressure (gives slightly higher FPS and better cold weather performance) but is less forgiving on seals and more expensive per shot. Green gas is gentler on internals and easier to refill but suffers in cold weather. Many GBB guns can use either, check your specific model.
