Your airsoft gun’s battery is one of the most overlooked components, yet it directly affects trigger response, rate of fire and how long you can play before needing a swap. Choosing the right battery (and looking after it properly) makes a bigger difference than most players realise.
This guide covers everything you need to know about airsoft batteries in 2026: LiPo vs NiMH, voltage explained, what size fits your gun, charging safely and our specific recommendations for every setup.

A safe, reliable 7.4V LiPo that runs almost any stock AEG happily without needing a MOSFET. The ideal first battery for a new player and our go-to recommendation for out-of-the-box guns.
Best 11.1V upgrade: Rebel 11.1v 1250mAh Stick
Step up to 11.1V for noticeably snappier trigger response and a higher rate of fire. Best paired with an upgraded gun or one fitted with a MOSFET to protect the trigger contacts.
Best nunchuck fit: Rebel 7.4v 1450mAh Nunchuck
The nunchuck shape splits into two halves that sit either side of the barrel, so it fits tight crane stocks and PDW bodies where a solid stick will not go. Same safe 7.4V for stock guns, with a little more capacity for a longer game day.
LiPo vs NiMH, Which Battery Type?
There are two battery chemistries used in airsoft: LiPo (Lithium Polymer) and NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride). In 2026, LiPo is the clear winner for most players but NiMH still has its place.

LiPo (Lithium Polymer)
LiPo batteries are lighter, more powerful, charge faster and deliver more consistent voltage throughout their discharge cycle. They’re the standard in modern airsoft.
Advantages:
- Higher energy density = more power in a smaller, lighter package
- Consistent voltage output, no gradual slowdown as the battery drains
- Faster charge times (1-2 hours vs 4-8 hours for NiMH)
- Better trigger response and rate of fire
- No “memory effect”, charge from any state without degradation
Disadvantages:
- Requires a balance charger (not a basic wall charger)
- Must be stored at storage voltage (3.8v per cell) if not used for extended periods
- Can puff (swell) if mistreated, damaged LiPos must be disposed of safely
- Should not be fully discharged, most AEGs with MOSFETs have low-voltage cutoff to prevent this
NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride)
NiMH batteries are more forgiving and harder to damage through misuse. They’re the “safe” option.
Advantages:
- More forgiving, harder to damage through over-discharge or incorrect charging
- Simpler charging, basic smart chargers work fine
- Cheaper upfront
- Safer for young/new players who might not follow LiPo care procedures
Disadvantages:
- Heavier and larger for the same capacity
- Voltage drops gradually as the battery drains, you’ll notice the gun slowing down
- Slower charge times (4-8 hours)
- Self-discharge when not in use (loses charge sitting on a shelf)
- “Memory effect” can reduce capacity over time if repeatedly partially charged
The Verdict
Use LiPo. The performance advantage is significant, the price difference is negligible and the “extra care” required is minimal once you understand the basics. The only exception: if you’re buying for a young player who won’t follow charging rules, NiMH is the safer choice.

Understanding Voltage, 7.4v vs 11.1v
Voltage is the single biggest factor in how your battery affects performance. Higher voltage = faster motor spin = faster trigger response and higher rate of fire.
7.4v LiPo (2-cell / 2S)
The safe, universal option. Compatible with virtually every AEG, with or without a MOSFET.
- Equivalent to: 8.4v NiMH (the old “standard” battery)
- Performance: Good trigger response, standard rate of fire (12-16 RPS on most AEGs)
- Compatibility: Safe for all AEGs, including those without MOSFET/ETU
- Best for: Most players, guns without MOSFET, first-time LiPo users
11.1v LiPo (3-cell / 3S)
The performance option. Noticeably faster trigger response and higher rate of fire but requires a MOSFET to protect the gun’s trigger contacts.
- Equivalent to: Nothing in NiMH, 11.1v LiPo delivers more than any NiMH
- Performance: Snappy trigger response, higher rate of fire (16-25+ RPS), faster semi-auto cycling
- Compatibility: MOSFET/ETU required, without one, 11.1v will burn out trigger contacts within weeks
- Best for: Guns with MOSFET, players who want maximum trigger speed, competitive play

Capacity (mAh), How Long Will It Last?
Capacity is measured in milliamp-hours (mAh). Higher mAh = more shots before the battery needs charging.
How Many Shots Per Charge?
A rough guide based on typical AEG consumption:

Our recommendation: 1,200-1,500mAh is the sweet spot for most setups. It lasts a full game day for most players and fits comfortably in standard battery compartments. Always bring a spare regardless of capacity, running out mid-game is never fun.
Battery Shapes and Sizes, What Fits Your Gun?
This is where many first-time buyers get caught out. Airsoft batteries come in different shapes and not all shapes fit all guns.

Stick Type
Long and thin. Fits inside buffer tubes (M4 crane stocks), along AK top covers or inside handguards. The most versatile shape, if in doubt, a stick-type LiPo usually fits.
Nunchuck / Butterfly Type
Two cells connected by a wire, allowing them to sit either side of an obstacle. Common in older designs where the battery sits around the gearbox or either side of the barrel.
PEQ / Brick Type
Short, flat rectangle. Fits inside PEQ boxes (external battery boxes mounted on rails) or large handguards. Higher capacity possible due to compact layout.

Pro tip: Before buying a battery, open your gun’s battery compartment and measure the space with a ruler. Compare those measurements to the battery dimensions listed on the product page. A few millimetres can mean the difference between fitting and not fitting.
Connectors, Tamiya vs Deans
The connector is how the battery plugs into your gun. There are two common types:
Tamiya (Mini Tamiya)
The most common connector on stock airsoft guns, especially budget and mid-range models. Easy to find, universal compatibility. Downside: higher resistance than Deans, meaning some power is wasted as heat at the connector.
Deans (T-Plug)
Lower resistance, more efficient power delivery, more secure connection. Most aftermarket MOSFETs use Deans. Many players rewire their guns to Deans as a first upgrade, it’s cheap (£5-10 for connectors and solder) and gives a small but noticeable improvement in trigger response.
Our recommendation: If your gun has Tamiya connectors and you’re happy with performance, there’s no urgent need to switch. If you’re installing a MOSFET or rewiring anyway, switch to Deans while you’re at it. Our workshop can rewire your gun to Deans for a small fee.
Charging Safely, The Non-Negotiable Rules
LiPo batteries store a lot of energy in a small package. Treated correctly, they’re perfectly safe. Mistreated, they can swell, vent or in extreme cases catch fire. These rules are non-negotiable:

Essential LiPo Safety Rules
- Always use a balance charger, Never use a “trickle” or basic wall charger with LiPo batteries. Balance chargers monitor each cell individually and stop charging when full. They cost £15-30 and are essential.
- Never leave charging unattended, Stay in the room while your LiPo charges. Most incidents happen during charging.
- Use a LiPo-safe bag, Charge inside a fireproof LiPo bag (£5-10). It contains any potential incident.
- Don’t over-discharge, Stop using the battery when you notice performance dropping. Most MOSFETs have a low-voltage cutoff that does this automatically. Never drain a LiPo below 3.0v per cell.
- Store at storage voltage, If you won’t use the battery for more than a week, use your charger’s “storage” mode to set each cell to 3.8v. Don’t store fully charged or fully drained.
- Inspect before each use, If a LiPo is puffy, punctured or damaged in any way, stop using it immediately. Dispose of it safely (most recycling centres accept LiPo batteries).
- Don’t charge immediately after use, Let the battery cool to room temperature before charging. Hot batteries + charging = accelerated degradation.
What Charger Should You Buy?
A good balance charger is the most important battery accessory. Look for:
- Balance charging, Charges each cell individually (essential for LiPo safety)
- Storage mode, Automatically sets cells to 3.8v for long-term storage
- Discharge function, Can safely discharge over-charged batteries
- Cell count detection, Automatically detects 2S or 3S batteries

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use 11.1v LiPo without a MOSFET?
Technically yes but we strongly advise against it. 11.1v without a MOSFET will burn out your trigger contacts, usually within a few hundred rounds. The contacts aren’t designed for the electrical load and will arc, pit and eventually fail. Either use 7.4v or install a MOSFET first. Our upgrade guide covers MOSFET options.
How long do airsoft LiPo batteries last?
With proper care (balance charging, storage voltage, not over-discharging), a LiPo battery lasts 300-500 charge cycles, roughly 2-4 years of regular weekend use. Capacity gradually decreases over time; when it feels noticeably weaker, replace it.
What does “C rating” mean?
C rating indicates the maximum safe discharge rate. A 25C 1200mAh battery can safely deliver 30A (25 × 1.2A). For airsoft, anything 20C or above is fine, most AEG motors draw 15-25A. Don’t worry about ultra-high C ratings; 25-30C is plenty for any airsoft application.
Can I use a LiPo charger for NiMH and vice versa?
Multi-chemistry chargers (like the IMAX B6) can charge both, just select the correct mode. Never use a NiMH-only charger on a LiPo battery or a LiPo charger on NiMH. The charging profiles are completely different and using the wrong one is dangerous.
My battery doesn’t fit, what do I do?
Measure your battery compartment and compare to the battery’s listed dimensions. If it’s close, a slightly smaller capacity battery in the correct shape will fit. If no standard battery fits, consider: wiring to an external PEQ box (adds a battery box on your gun’s rail), using a different stock (M4 crane stocks have more space than solid stocks) or ask our workshop to route the wiring for a different battery location.
