Reliable fire, strike after strike

Kombat UK’s Large Army Fire Starter is a rugged ferrocerium fire steel built to light fires in the field when matches and lighters let you down. Run the supplied striker down the rod and it throws a hot shower of sparks into your tinder, giving you a dependable ignition source rated for up to 4000 strikes.

Big enough to use easily

The generous 8cm rod is far easier to grip and strike than the tiny keyring starters, which really counts when your hands are cold, wet or gloved. That extra size means a stronger, more controlled strike and less fumbling at exactly the moment you need a fire.

Weatherproof performance

A ferro rod keeps working where other fire lighters fail. It still sparks reliably when wet or cold, so as long as you can prepare dry tinder you have a fighting chance of a fire in poor conditions. The attached lanyard loop keeps the rod and striker together in your pack.

A survival kit essential

Compact, tough and long-lasting, this fire starter is a smart addition to any bushcraft, camping, cadet, scout or EDC kit, one of those just-in-case tools worth keeping to hand. Pair it with more field kit from our tactical gear range.

Frequently asked questions

How does a fire steel work?

You run the supplied striker firmly down the ferrocerium rod to shave off tiny particles that ignite into a hot shower of sparks. Aim those sparks into dry tinder to get a flame going, no matches or lighter fuel required.

How long will it last?

This large rod is rated for up to 4000 strikes, so with sensible use it will light countless fires before it needs replacing, making it a dependable long-term addition to a survival or EDC kit.

Does it work in the wet?

Yes. Unlike matches or a damp lighter, a ferro rod still throws sparks when wet or cold. Dry your tinder as best you can and the fire steel will still perform in poor weather.

Why choose the large size over a compact one?

The larger 8cm rod is easier to hold and strike, especially with cold or gloved hands, so it is far less fiddly than the tiny keyring starters. That makes it a more reliable choice when it matters.

Is there an age restriction on this item?

A fire steel is a spark-throwing striker, not a bladed article or fuel, so there is no legal age restriction on purchase. As with any fire-lighting tool, it should be used responsibly and kept away from young children.
