Light and bug protection in one
The Thermacell Bristol lantern does two jobs at once: it works as an LED lantern and, independently, as a mosquito and midge repeller. The light and the repellent run separately, so you can use either on its own, for example running the repellent quietly in daylight or lighting the camp without the repellent.
How the repellent works
A butane cartridge inside the lantern gently heats a repellent mat, releasing a scent-free vapour that creates a protection zone of around 21 square metres. There is no spray on your skin, no open flame and no smell, which is why it suits enclosed pitches, fishing swims and campsites where minimal air movement lets the zone build.
Runtime and consumables
Each butane cartridge lasts up to around 12 hours and each repellent mat lasts up to around 4 hours, changing from blue to white when it is spent so you know when to swap it. Refill packs of cartridges and mats are widely available. The LED light runs from 3 x AAA batteries (not included), separate from the repellent fuel.
Give it time to build
Allow roughly 10 to 30 minutes after switching on for the vapour to spread and take full effect. It is for outdoor use only and performs best in still conditions.
