Prometheus EG Hard Gear, built for abuse

The Laylax Prometheus EG Hard Gear set is one of the most respected upgrade gear sets in airsoft. Made in Japan from forged, heat-treated steel, it is engineered to survive the punishing loads of high-torque motors and heavy springs where lesser gears strip or shear. This is the 20:1 ratio, the high-torque option in the range.

Why choose the 20:1 ratio

Gear ratio is a trade-off between torque and speed. The 20:1 set leans towards torque, giving your motor an easier time turning stronger springs. That makes it the natural choice for higher-FPS rifles, DMR builds and any setup where reliable pull and trigger response matter more than a blistering rate of fire.

Materials and manufacture

High-stress areas are CNC machined from heat-treated steel while the rest is metal injection moulded from steel, giving strength exactly where the gear train needs it. The tooth profile is designed for a clean, quiet mesh, so once correctly shimmed the box runs smoother and quieter than tired factory gears.

Fitting and set-up

The set includes the bevel, spur and sector gears. Fitting is a workshop job: the gearbox must be stripped, the new gears fitted and the whole train carefully re-shimmed and lubricated. Team the gears with quality bushings or bearings and a suitable motor for the best results. Explore more airsoft accessories to finish the build.

Let us fit them for you

Installing upgrade gears correctly takes experience. If you would rather have the job done right first time, our workshop can handle the full rebuild. See our airsoft gun repair service in Kent.

Frequently asked questions

What does the 20:1 ratio mean?

The 20:1 ratio describes how many times the gears turn relative to the sector gear. It is a high-torque ratio, favouring pulling power for stronger springs over outright rate of fire, making it ideal for higher-FPS or DMR-style builds.

Which gearboxes do these gears fit?

They are designed for standard airsoft AEG gearboxes. Always check your specific gearbox version and existing gear type before fitting, and re-shim carefully on installation.

Are these strong enough for a high-torque motor?

Yes. The high-stress areas are CNC machined from heat-treated steel, so the set is built to take the loads of high-torque motors and heavy springs without stripping teeth.

Do I need to re-shim after fitting these?

Absolutely. Any time you change gears the gearbox must be re-shimmed so the new set meshes cleanly. Skipping this step causes noise, wear and possible failure.

Will these make my gearbox quieter?

The redesigned tooth profile and precision manufacture give a tighter, cleaner mesh, which typically runs quieter than worn or budget gears once correctly shimmed and lubricated.
