The workhorse tightbore upgrade

SHS have been making airsoft internals for a long time and this 6.03mm barrel is the part of their range most players end up buying. It takes the bore down from the 6.05mm to 6.08mm typical of a stock AEG barrel to a precision 6.03mm, so less air slips past the BB and more of the cylinder volume does useful work. The bore is polished, so the BB is guided cleanly rather than skipping down a rough tube. On a rifle still running its factory barrel, this is one of the largest gains per pound you can buy.

Pick the right length

Getting the length right matters more than getting the brand right. Match the barrel to your outer barrel assembly, not to the overall length of the gun. We stock the three most useful sizes:

  • 229mm suits the MP5 family, including MP5A4, MP5A5, SD5, SD6 and MP5 RAS, and the AK Beta Spetsnaz.
  • 247mm suits the G36C, P90, CAR15 and SG552.
  • 300mm suits the M733, M1A1 Thompson, G36K and MC51 length builds.

These are the Tokyo Marui reference lengths and most manufacturers follow them closely, but not perfectly. Measure your existing inner barrel before ordering, and if you land between two sizes, round down. A barrel that is slightly short still works correctly, whereas one that is too long protrudes past the muzzle or fouls the outer barrel.

Brass, and what that means in practice

These are the brass version of the SHS barrel rather than the stainless line. Brass is softer than steel, so it is kind to BBs and easy to clean without worrying about scratching the bore, and it machines to a consistent internal diameter without needing any coating on top. It is the material most precision barrels in this price bracket use, and for a skirmish rifle running normal spring rates it does the job perfectly well. The hop window is the standard AEG bridge type cut, so a normal TM spec bucking fits and the barrel sits correctly in a standard hop chamber.

Fitting and chronographing

Changing an inner barrel means pulling the barrel and hop assembly out of the gun, releasing the C clip, moving your bucking across and reassembling with the hop window at the top. It is well within reach of anyone who has had a gearbox out before, and it needs no permanent modification. A tighter bore can lift your output slightly, so chronograph the gun after fitting and adjust hop or spring as needed. Our guide to UK airsoft FPS limits sets out the usual site caps. If you would rather have it done properly first time, our airsoft repair and upgrade workshop in Rochester can fit, re-shim and chrono it.

What to pair it with

A precision barrel only performs as well as what is feeding it. A worn hop rubber will waste the whole upgrade, so fit a fresh hop rubber and nub at the same time if yours has done a few seasons. Tighter bores are also less forgiving of poor ammunition, so run good quality seamless airsoft BBs at a sensible weight and keep the bore clean. Our BB weight guide and our guide to which upgrades to do first both cover how a barrel fits into a wider build. Frequently asked questions

Which length do I need for my rifle?

Match the barrel to your outer barrel assembly. At Platoon Stores the 229mm suits the MP5 family and the AK Beta Spetsnaz, the 247mm suits the G36C, P90, CAR15 and SG552, and the 300mm suits M733, M1A1 Thompson, G36K and MC51 length builds. If in doubt, measure your existing inner barrel and round down.

Is this the brass or the stainless SHS barrel?

This is the brass version. SHS make both, and the brass line is the one most players fit to a skirmish rifle. Brass is softer, easy to clean, kind to BBs and machines to a consistent bore without needing any coating.

How much accuracy will it actually add?

A tighter, more consistent bore improves the air seal and reduces how much the BB rattles on its way out, which usually shows up as tighter grouping and better consistency shot to shot. The size of the gain depends on how worn your existing barrel is and how good your hop rubber and BBs are.

Why 6.03mm rather than a tighter 6.01mm bore?

6.03mm is the sweet spot for most skirmish builds. It gains meaningfully over a stock barrel while staying far more tolerant of BB quality and dirt than an ultra tight 6.01mm bore, which needs premium ammunition and frequent cleaning to behave.

Does it come with a hop rubber?

No, it is supplied as a bare inner barrel. That lets you keep a bucking you are happy with, but if yours has been in the gun for a couple of seasons then fitting a fresh hop rubber and nub at the same time will make a bigger difference than the barrel on its own.

Do I need UKARA or to be over 18 to buy this?

No. An inner barrel is an internal spare part rather than a gun, so there is no UKARA defence requirement and no age restriction on buying it.
